10:25 AM EDT, 08/28/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US President Donald Trump has fired Robert Primus from the Surface Transportation Board, which is reviewing the merger between Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) and Union Pacific ( UNP ) , according to news reports published Thursday.

Primus was the only board member who opposed the merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern, which the Surface Transportation Board eventually cleared in 2023, news outlets reported.

Primus told The Wall Street Journal that he plans to continue his work in the Surface Transportation Board and that he would seek legal options if prevented from doing so.

The White House did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
