04:58 PM EST, 12/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US President-elect Donald Trump hinted at a political event on Sunday that efforts by the US government to force out TikTok's Chinese ownership may be premature.
Current US President Joe Biden signed legislation in April that would shut down the video-sharing platform in the US if Byte Dance, TikTok's parent company in Beijing, can't or won't sell the social media company to a buyer from the US within nine to 12 months of the measure taking effect. That deadline could happen as soon as Jan. 19, or the day before Trump will begin his second term as president on Jan. 20.
Both Byte Dance and TikTok have been trying to win over Trump as an ally while fighting the proposal in federal court, with the US Supreme Court scheduled to hear oral arguments in their appeal on Jan. 10.
Trump touted his success in reaching younger voters through TikTok during his hour-long address at the Turning Point conference on Sunday but stopped short of saying what his efforts could entail or what kind of deal he was willing to accept.
