06:24 AM EDT, 07/11/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose 35% tariffs on Canadian goods, effective Aug. 1, saying that Canada failed to stop the flow of fentanyl into the US and instead retaliated with its own tariffs.
In a letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump also complained about the country's tariff- and non-tariff trade barriers that impact US dairy farmers and others.
"If for any reason you decide to raise your tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 35% that we charge," Trump wrote in the letter, which was posted on a social media.
