06:47 AM EDT, 03/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Tyson Foods ( TSN ) said Monday that it is closing a pork plant in Iowa and eliminating jobs, news outlets reported.

The plant employs around 1,200 people, Reuters reported, citing a local official. The facility is located in the town of Perry, near the state capital of Des Moines.

"While this decision was not easy, it emphasizes our focus to optimize the efficiency of our operations to best serve our customers," the company said in a statement, according to these reports.

The company has shut six chicken plants across the nation over the last year and eliminated about 4,700 jobs, Bloomberg reported.
