02:06 PM EDT, 09/12/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Uber Technologies ( UBER ) is being sued by the US Department of Justice for allegedly discriminating against passengers with disabilities, including people who use service animals and mobility devices like stowable wheelchairs, the DOJ said Friday.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, seeks $125 million in damages for individuals who previously filed complaints with either Uber ( UBER ) or the DOJ, it added.
The complaint alleges that Uber ( UBER ) and its drivers frequently refuse to provide rides to individuals with disabilities, impose impermissible fees, such as cleaning charges for service animal shedding or cancellation fees for denied rides, and fail to make policy changes that discourage such discrimination.
The DOJ said it is also asking the court to require Uber ( UBER ) to change its policies to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, train its employees and drivers on the law, and stop all discriminatory practices. The lawsuit also seeks a civil penalty to "vindicate the public's interest in eliminating disability discrimination."
"We have a clear zero-tolerance policy for confirmed service denials, and we fundamentally disagree with the DOJ's allegations," the company told MT Newswires.
Uber ( UBER ) added that it requires all drivers to agree to its US Service Animal Policy and follow accessibility laws before they can use the Driver app, and that the company also regularly reminds drivers of these rules. "When we confirm a violation, we take decisive action, including permanent account deactivation."
