02:23 PM EST, 11/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Uber Technologies ( UBER ) , Lyft ( LYFT ) and other ride-share drivers in Massachusetts can now unionize after the state's voters approved a related ballot measure, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.
About 54% of Massachusetts' voters backed the measure that would allow ride-share drivers to organize and bargain collectively, reports said.
Ride-share drivers, which companies consider as independent contractors, are not covered under federal labor law since it only addresses actual employees, Reuters said.
"With the passage of this ballot measure, we look forward to working collaboratively on its implementations and addressing some of the language concerns we have during the legislative session next year," a Lyft ( LYFT ) spokesman told MT Newswires via email.
Uber ( UBER ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
