UIDAI CEO says Aadhaar can't be misused, caution people against posting personal details online
Aug 24, 2018 9:47 AM

After Supreme Court delivered its landmark judgement, ruling privacy as a fundamental right, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Friday said that Aadhaar number can't be misused, but cautioned people to not upload personal information on social platforms unnecessarily.

In an exclusive interview to CNBC-TV18's Ashmit Kumar, Ajay Bhushan Pandey, chief executive officer, said, "We have issued a detailed FAQ just few days back and we have said that Aadhaar number has to be used very freely. You can give your Aadhaar card to everyone and be rest assured that nobody will be able to misuse your Aadhaar even if he knows your number."

"If Aadhaar number is to be used for proving your identity, then your finger print is required, your face also will be requires after some time. So, your usage of Aadhaar number is not possible unless and until it is accompanied by a finger print or OTP and face and iris," Pandey said.

Pandey further added, "Putting Aadhaar number on social media are completely unnecessary, because credit card or debit card when you use, you use it with OTP and signatures and other things. But still, you don't put your debit card, credit card details on the internet."

Speaking on privacy as a fundamental right Pandey said, "This is the first anniversary of privacy case judgement. This privacy case arose from the Aadhaar. While this whole Aadhaar issue was being debated in the Supreme Court during the last 5-6 years, during this time, the parliament brought in Aadhaar Act. The Aadhaar Act was brought in with the presumption that privacy is a fundamental right and this act was passed in 2016."

"In 2017, nine judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court did declare privacy as a fundamental right. The parliament, while passing the Aadhaar Act had already accepted that privacy is a fundamental right and accordingly, all those privacy protection measures were incorporated in the Aadhaar Act itself," he added

"Then the Supreme Court has given a clear cut verdict last year that the privacy is a fundamental right and therefore, privacy has to be protected just like any other fundamental right. In order to achieve that objective, government has constituted justice Srikrishna's Committee and the committee has almost about a month back given a report. In that report, it has given very detailed recommendations," Pandey said.
