UK Competition Regulator Closes Inquiry Into Amazon Partnership With Anthropic
Oct 2, 2024 11:56 PM

07:45 AM EDT, 09/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The UK Competition and Markets Authority said Friday it found that no relevant merger situation has been created in Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) partnership with Anthropic and decided that the transaction does not qualify for investigation under the Enterprise Act 2002.

In September 2023, Amazon ( AMZN ) and Anthropic entered into a strategic partnership under which Amazon ( AMZN ) agreed to invest up to $4 billion, which is convertible into non-voting equity, in Anthropic, resulting in Amazon ( AMZN ) gaining certain rights with respect to the Anthropic business.

"The CMA found that Anthropic's UK turnover does not exceed 70 million pounds ($93.7 million) in the UK, nor do the parties, on the basis of the available evidence, together account for a 25% or more share of supply of any description of goods or services in the UK," the regulator said.
