07:02 AM EDT, 04/05/2024 (MT Newswires) -- A United Airlines Holdings ( UAL ) pilot whose plane skidded off the runway in Houston last month is now under scrutiny by federal authorities questioning the judgment of the pilot of the aircraft.
No one was injured in the March 8 flight of a Boeing ( BA ) 737-8 from Memphis to George Bush Intercontinental Airport; the incident took place after the plane landed and was attempting to slow down.
According to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilot may have misjudged slippery conditions on the runway and diverged from the airlines' rules on braking under such conditions.
The pilot reportedly told investigators he didn't realize conditions were slippery until it was too late, and "aggressively" used manual brakes when he received a warning that there remained only 1,000 feet of runway. The plane skidded off the runway, with one of its wings burrowing into the ground.
The pilot reportedly did not abide by United guidelines requiring pilots to use maximum reverse thrust immediately after rear-wheel touchdown nor set the autobrakes.
United Airlines has reportedly been barred from further expansion until its safety procedures are reviewed following a series of mishaps.
