02:03 PM EST, 03/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- United Airlines (UAL) will pause hiring new pilots in May and June due to delays in aircraft deliveries from Boeing ( BA ) , the airline told its pilots on Thursday.
"We wanted to let you know that United will slow the pace of pilot hires this year due to continued new aircraft certification and manufacturing delays at Boeing ( BA )," Marc Champion, vice president of flight operations, and Kirk Limacher, vice president of flight ops planning and development, said in a memo seen by MT Newswires.
United had contractual deliveries for 80 Boeing Max 10 planes this year alone, but because the aircraft has yet to be certified, "it's impossible to know when they will arrive," they said.
United Airlines is expected to resume new hire classes for pilots in July, they said.
Boeing ( BA ) declined to comment.
Of the contracted aircraft deliveries this year, United expects to receive 37 of the 43 Boeing 737 Max 8 models, and only 19 of the 34 Boeing 737 Max 9 models, according to its recent filing.
