12:26 PM EDT, 06/11/2024 (MT Newswires) -- United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain is facing a probe by a federal court-appointed monitor over allegations of retaliation against other union officials.
Neil Barofsky, the monitor, is investigating Fain after the union's secretary-treasurer, Margaret Mock, claimed she faced retaliation for refusing to authorize certain expenditures for his office, according to a Monday court filing with the US District Court Eastern District of Michigan Southern Division.
In February, the union's international executive board passed a motion to support Fain in withdrawing all of Mock's field assignments. Mock "lodged allegations of her own" in response, saying "the charges against her were false, and that the removal of her authority was improperly instigated in retaliation," the filing showed. Barofsky is also looking into Mock's actions.
"We encourage the monitor to investigate whatever claims are brought to their office, because we know what they'll find: a UAW leadership committed to serving the membership, and running a democratic union," Fain said in a statement cited by CNBC. "We're staying focused on winning record contracts, growing our union, and fighting for economic and social justice on and off the job."
The union and Barofsky did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
Fain rose to prominence last year after the UAW, under his leadership, finalized new and improved labor deals with auto giants General Motors ( GM ) , Ford Motor ( F ) and Stellantis ( STLA ) . Employees at different facilities of the three companies launched strikes after not meeting the union's requirements for their members.
The court document claims that the UAW's cooperation with Barofsky has been diminishing with the union only producing about 2,600 of the roughly 116,000 documents he has requested in relation to the investigation. Barofsky also opened a separate probe in April into potential embezzlement by an unnamed international executive board member and regional director, the filing showed.
