Mar 15, 2024 12:36 PM

03:26 PM EDT, 03/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- United States Steel's ( X ) acquisition by Nippon Steel will have drastic consequences on the domestic workers and enforcement of trade laws, Senator Sherrod Brown wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo Friday.

The transaction will also negatively impact the security of the country's industrial supply chain in addition to its national and economic security, according to the letter.

Brown said Nippon failed to engage with union workers on the proposed acquisition and the transaction threatens the government's ability to enforce antidumping and countervailing duty cases.

Brown requested the president and secretary of commerce to stop the sale and protect the country's steel industry.
