United Steelworkers Welcomes Trump's Opposition to Proposed US Steel-Nippon Deal
Dec 3, 2024 7:57 AM

10:35 AM EST, 12/03/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The United Steelworkers union on Tuesday welcomed President-elect Donald Trump's continued opposition to Nippon Steel's proposed acquisition of United States Steel ( X ) .

"I will block this deal from happening. Buyer Beware!!!" Trump said in a Truth Social post Monday.

"It's clear that President Trump understands the vital role a strong domestic steel industry plays in our national security, as well as the importance of the jobs and communities the industry supports," USW International President David McCall said Tuesday.

The deal has been under review for more than 10 months and additional time will not change the union's position that "it's bad" for USW members across the states where US Steel operates, McCall said.

US Steel didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

The company's shares were down 9.8% in recent trading.
