UnitedHealth Group's Insurance Unit Ordered to Reconsider Denied Claim for Mental Health, Substance Abuse Treatment
Dec 6, 2024 9:18 AM

11:50 AM EST, 12/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- UnitedHealth Group's ( UNH ) insurance unit was ordered by a US judge to again reconsider its previously denied coverage claim for a teenager's $175,000 mental health and substance abuse treatments, saying the latest denial had no legal basis, according to a Thursday court document.

The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit in 2019 after the insurer denied their claim and won the suit, with Judge Jill Parrish of the Utah District Court awarding them their claimed benefits. During appeal, US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit upheld the earlier court decision but disagreed with the award, ordering instead for the claim to be sent back to United Healthcare Insurance for reconsideration.

United Healthcare Insurance again denied the claim but Parrish said the her court needed to issue a remand order before the redetermination process, and found the insurer's second denial as invalid.

UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
