Under its new name—Capria India—Unitus Ventures will now be a part of what Capria Ventures says is its unified strategy of investing in the Global South. Launched in 2012, Unitus Ventures is a founding member of Capria Network, which has grown into a global VC house with assets of nearly $200 million.

With Unitus Ventures’ portfolio of 24 startups, including the likes of BetterPlace, Awign, Cuemath and Masai School, Capria Network will have a global roster of more than 350 startups operating across India, Latin America, South East Asia and Africa.

Following the transition, Capria Ventures is looking to double down in India, bringing additional resources including capital, global expertise and learnings from other developing markets, especially “a sharp focus on leveraging Generative AI.”

“We’re Global South specialists who invested through the mobile revolution and now see GenAI as an even bigger opportunity for the Global South. We started embracing GenAI shortly after the release of ChatGPT. Going forward, more than 75 percent of our investments will be placed in applied GenAI companies,” said Will Poole, Managing Partner, Capria Ventures and former Managing Partner, Unitus Ventures.

Capria Ventures says it has recently made ten investments in applied GenAI companies and plans to back over 30 more GenAI-focused startups. The firm announced the first close of its new $100 million Global South Fund-II in April.

“GenAI is emerging as a talent and language equaliser, amplifying the Global South’s demographic advantage by opening up vast new markets in the region,” said Surya Mantha, Managing Partner, Capria Ventures and former Managing Partner, Unitus Ventures, highlighting the shift in the India portfolio.

Masai School, a zero-to-one coding school, is using GenAI to reinvent its curriculum and teaching methods while BharatAgri, a crop-input advisory and e-commerce platform, is using the new technology to enhance its ability to respond accurately to farmer queries and Cuemath, an online mathematics education platform, is creating virtual co-pilots for educators and students.

Unitus Ventures, the VC firm has been accumulating dry-powder, with the first close of its Rs 300 crore fund announced earlier this year. Besides Generative AI, as Capria India, the firm will expand the focus of investments to include Climate and Agtech in addition to Jobtech, Fintech and SaaS.
