23andMe (ME) is facing a probe by the UK and Canadian regulators over a data breach in October that may have exposed the personal information of its customers.
The UK's Information Commissioner's Office said Monday it launched the joint investigation with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. The probe aims to assess the scope of leaked information, its potential impact on the affected people, and whether 23andMe had enough data protection measures and complied with data protection laws in notifying authorities, the regulator said.
"23andMe acknowledges the joint investigation announced by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the UK Information Commissioner," a company spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires. "We intend to cooperate with these regulators' reasonable requests relating to the credential stuffing attack discovered in October 2023."
