Update: Alphabet's Google Says Customer Data Stolen by Hacking Group in Database Breach
Aug 6, 2025 9:46 AM

12:19 PM EDT, 08/06/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with statements from Google ( GOOG ) and Salesforce ( CRM ) starting in fifth paragraph.)

Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) said that some customers data was stolen in a breach of one of its Salesforce ( CRM ) database systems.

The system, which was used to store contact information and related notes for small and medium businesses, was breached by a hacking group known as ShinyHunters, formally designated as UNC6040, Google ( GOOG ) said Tuesday in a blog post.

"The data retrieved by the threat actor was confined to basic and largely publicly available business information, such as business names and contact details," Google ( GOOG ) said.

The number of customers affected by the breach was not disclosed.

Salesforce ( CRM ) said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires that the issue was not due to any known vulnerability in its platform.

"We continue to encourage all customers to follow security best practices, including enabling multi-factor authentication, enforcing the principle of least privilege, and carefully managing connected applications," a Salesforce ( CRM ) spokesperson said Wednesday.

Google ( GOOG ) said Wednesday in an emailed statement to MT Newswires that information from its blog post "provides the security community with actionable intelligence" on the hackers, including indicators of compromise.

Alphabet shares rose 0.6% in recent Wednesday trading, and Salesforce ( CRM ) gained 0.1%.
