Update: Amazon Ends Development of Fertility Tracking Product
Nov 13, 2024 1:42 PM

04:23 PM EST, 11/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Amazon ( AMZN ) comment starting in the first paragraph.)

Amazon.com ( AMZN ) discontinued plans to develop an at-home fertility tracker, Margaret Callahan, a company spokesperson, said Wednesday in an email to MT Newswires.

The secretive project, codenamed Encore, had been underway for four years and involved the development of a fertility monitoring device and companion smartphone application, CNBC reported earlier Wednesday, citing internal documents and people familiar with the matter.

The Encore team was part of Amazon's ( AMZN ) Grand Challenge, also known as its Special Projects division, CNBC said. About 100 employees will be affected, Amazon ( AMZN ) said.

"Following a recent review, we've decided to discontinue this project within Grand Challenge, and we're working directly with employees whose roles are impacted to support them through the transition and help them find other opportunities within Amazon ( AMZN )," Callahan said in the email.

The product faced technical and cost issues, CNBC said.

Amazon ( AMZN ) shares rose 0.1% in after-hours trading.
