Update: Amazon India Employees Join Black Friday Strike
Nov 29, 2024 5:08 AM

07:35 AM EST, 11/29/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with comments from Amazon India in the last two paragraphs.)

Amazon ( AMZN ) employees in India said they have joined a Black Friday strike demanding higher wages and improved working conditions.

Around 200 warehouse workers and delivery drivers joined a rally in New Delhi called by the Amazon India Workers Union, the Associated Press reported.

The labor action coincides with what is considered one of the year's biggest consumer spending weekends and was held in coordination with anticipated protests at Amazon ( AMZN ) warehouses in other countries.

"The first union of Amazon ( AMZN ) workers in India made its voice resonate in Delhi today," the labor group posted on the social media platform X. "We stand in solidarity with workers globally and demand decent working conditions."

In a statement to MT Newswires, Amazon India said the company has not seen the strike impact its operations. "Our teams across India continue to do what they do every day, deliver for our customers," the company said.

"The fact is that we provide fair and competitive wages and regularly review our wage structure against industry benchmarks, ensuring adherence to all applicable wage laws across the states where we operate," the company added.
