Update: Apple Challenges UK Government Order on Encrypted Data Access; UK Tribunal Rejects Secrecy Bid
Apr 7, 2025 10:53 AM

01:44 PM EDT, 04/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Apple's ( AAPL ) appeal in the headline and first paragraph.)

Apple ( AAPL ) filed an appeal to stop a British government order requiring the company to allow access to its encrypted cloud storage systems, according to a Monday court document by the Investigatory Powers Tribunal.

The tribunal has declined the UK government's request to hide the basic facts of Apple's ( AAPL ) anti-privacy case due to national security interests.

In January, the UK's Home Office issued a "technical capability notice" to Apple ( AAPL ), which asked the company to grant access to iPhone backups.

The IPT rejected the government's request to keep the basic facts of the case secret, ruling that disclosure does not threaten public interest or national security, according to the court document.

A short public judgment was released alongside a longer confidential ruling, and the IPT plans to issue further instructions once both sides have reviewed the judgment, as per the court ruling.

Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.

Shares were down 3.6% in recent trading.

Price: 181.57, Change: -6.81, Percent Change: -3.62
