10:57 AM EDT, 05/01/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Update with Apple's ( AAPL ) response to a request for comment in the third paragraph.)
Apple ( AAPL ) was ordered to pay a lump sum of $502 million to Optis Cellular Technology for the use of 4G patents in Apple ( AAPL ) devices, London's Court of Appeal ruled Thursday in the latest stage of a case that dates back to 2019.
"Assuming I have understood the Optis spreadsheet provided at the hearing correctly, the lump sum to cover a period from 2013 to 2027 would be $502 million," Lord Justice Colin Birss said in his ruling.
"We thank the court for their time but are disappointed by this decision and plan to appeal," an Apple ( AAPL ) spokesperson told MT Newswires via email. "Optis makes no products and their sole business is to sue companies using patents they buy. We will continue to defend against their attempts to extract unreasonable payments."
Optis did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
