Apple ( AAPL ) is facing an investigation in France over its use of voice recordings made with the Siri digital assistant, several media outlets reported Monday.

The probe follows a February complaint by the Human Rights League, which cited the testimony of whistleblower Thomas Le Bonniec, a former employee of an Apple ( AAPL ) subcontractor, according to a report from Politico, which said Apple ( AAPL ) is suspected of having used user recordings without their knowledge.

The proceedings have been handed over to the Office of the Anti-Cybercrime Agency and concern thousands of user recordings collected by Siri, the report said.

Apple ( AAPL ), referring to a post on its website from January, said that details users share with Siri are not sold to anyone, including advertisers, and that this data is not used to build marketing profiles.

The company said that in 2019, it made changes to privacy commitments, under which Siri does not retain audio recordings of user interactions. Apple ( AAPL ) said that even if users opt in to help Siri improve by learning from audio samples, only company employees are authorized to listen to user interactions.
