Update: Apple's Plan to Allow Music App Payments Outside App Store Under Review by European Commission
Apr 8, 2024 9:09 AM

11:34 AM EDT, 04/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with the European Commission's comment in the first and third paragraphs and Apple's ( AAPL ) response in the fourth paragraph.)

Apple's ( AAPL ) plan to comply with an order to inform music streaming providers such as Spotify Technology ( SPOT ) about payment options outside its App Store is being reviewed by the European Commission, the regulator confirmed Monday.

Under Apple's ( AAPL ) updated guidelines released Friday, Spotify ( SPOT ) and other music streaming providers may add a link on their websites to inform customers of other ways away from Apple's ( AAPL ) App Store to buy digital goods or services.

"We are currently assessing whether Apple ( AAPL ) has fully complied with the decision," a European Commission spokesperson told MT Newswires in an emailed comment. "In general, if the Commission suspects that there is non-compliance with an adopted decision, it will send the undertaking concerned a Statement of Objections ['S0'] explaining why it believes there is non-compliance."

Apple ( AAPL ) said on its website that it will review music streaming providers' apps to ensure they follow the "terms and conditions of the [Music Streaming Services] entitlement, as well as the App Review Guidelines and Apple Developer Program License Agreement."
