ArcelorMittal ( MT ) said Wednesday it is working with government officials in India to avoid a potential production shutdown at the company's joint venture with Nippon Steel due to current restrictions on low-ash metallurgical coke imports.
In a statement shared with MT Newswires on Wednesday, a company spokesperson said the joint venture remains hopeful it can strike a deal soon with the Indian government.
"We are confident that through constructive engagement, we will arrive at a mutually beneficial outcome to ensure our operations and ambitious expansion plans continue without interruption," the spokesman said.
Reuters reported the news earlier. In a Feb. 19 letter to India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, obtained by Reuters, CEO of the joint venture Dilip Oommen warned the facility may need to significantly scale back or even halt production unless it can obtain adequate supplies. The executive reportedly said the restrictions could also delay its $9 billion expansion plan in India.
