AstraZeneca's ( AZN ) was sued Monday by a trial participant in its COVID-19 vaccine study for failing to cover her medical costs following an injury.
Brianne Dressen alleged in her claim that the drugmaker's vaccine caused what doctors later diagnosed as post-vaccine neuropathy and that the company did not honor a contractual commitment to pay for medical treatment if a trial participant suffered a so-called research injury, as she had.
According to the lawsuit, Dressen in 2020 participated in AstraZeneca's ( AZN ) clinical trial in Salt Lake County, Utah, and began experiencing "progressively worrying symptoms" within hours of getting a shot of the company's experimental COVID-19 vaccine.
The symptoms included paresthesia, a term used to describe tingling and prickling under the skin. Dressen was diagnosed months later by neurologists at the National Institute of Health with post-vaccine neuropathy and remains disabled, the lawsuit said.
AstraZeneca ( AZN ) offered a "paltry sum" of $1,243.30 to Dressen after numerous requests for support, conditioned on her agreeing to release the company of all further financial responsibility for her care.
The lawsuit is seeking damages, including past and future medical expenses, among others.
AstraZeneca ( AZN ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
