Boeing ( BA ) and NASA said Friday that Starliner space craft is ready for its first test flight on June 1, roughly one month after the new capsule with two astronauts aboard was scrubbed upon discovery of a leaky valve.
The faulty pressure regulation valve has been replaced, officials from the space agency, Boeing ( BA ) and Lockheed Martin's (LMT) United Launch Alliance said during a news conference on Friday. But while crews were re-testing the Atlas 5 rocket they discovered a small leak in the propulsion system for the Starliner capsule, the officials said.
Engineers traced the leak to a small rubber seal and ultimately decided the spacecraft is safe to launch without first conducting extensive repairs because of the redundancies built into Starliner system, a NASA administrator said.
"There are 28 RCS thrusters across the vehicle and 27 of those do not have a leak," according to Steve Stich, the manager of NASA's commercial crew program. He later said Starliner could handle up to four more leaks and if that leak grew to 100 times its current size.
The rescheduled test flight will be June 1 and Starliner is slated to dock at the International Space Station and returning to Earth June 10.
