09:00 AM EDT, 08/05/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) attorney's original letter, company spokesperson's comment, as well as minor edits in second to last paragraph.)
CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) on Sunday rejected a claim by Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) that it should be blamed for flight disruptions after the July 19 global outage due to a faulty update.
CrowdStrike's ( CRWD ) attorney said in a letter that it is "highly disappointed by Delta's suggestion that CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) acted inappropriately and strongly rejects any allegation that it was grossly negligent or committed misconduct."
This comes after Delta's chief executive officer, Ed Bastian, said the incident had cost the airline $500 million and that it plans to take legal action to get compensation from the cybersecurity firm.
The CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) letter also noted that "any liability by CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) is contractually capped at an amount in the single-digit millions."
Delta canceled over 6,000 flights in six days and faces an investigation into why it took much longer to recover from the outage than other airlines, according to several media reports.
CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) further said in the letter that it reached out to Delta to offer help within hours of the outage "but received no response." The company said it would "respond aggressively" to any litigation.
"The letter speaks for itself. We have expressed our regret and apologies to all of our customers for this incident and the disruption that resulted," a spokesperson for CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) said in an emailed statement. "Public posturing about potentially bringing a meritless lawsuit against CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) as a long-time partner is not constructive to any party."
Delta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.
