An accident at a Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) Wheel & Brake Shop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday left two Delta team members dead and another injured, according to a memo obtained by MT Newswires that the company's TechOps division sent to the team.

A tire exploded as it was being removed from a Delta plane, but the cause of the explosion wasn't immediately clear, multiple media outlets had reported earlier.

"The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility," the airline said in the statement. "We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time."

Delta said is working with local authorities and conducting an investigation to determine what happened.
