Oct 2, 2024 10:58 PM

08:38 AM EDT, 10/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with a response from Snapchat in the last paragraph.)

The European Commission said Wednesday it has sent a request for information to Alphabet (GOOG) subsidiary Google's ( GOOG ) YouTube ( GOOG ), Snap's (SNAP) Snapchat, and TikTok to inquire about these platforms' recommender systems.

The Commission said YouTube ( GOOG ) and Snapchat were requested to share detailed parameters used in their algorithms to recommend content to users. They were also asked to provide information on their role in amplifying issues related to civic discourse and elections as well as the measures to protect minors and prevent the promotion of illegal drugs and hate speech, the Commission added.

TikTok was asked to provide details about how it prevents manipulation by malicious actors and the measures it employs to protect against risks that could affect elections and media pluralism.

The platforms were asked to respond by Nov. 15. The Commission said it will decide on potential further actions based on the responses.

A Snapchat spokesperson told MT Newswires that it received the request and will collaborate with the Commission. Google ( GOOG ) and TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
