08:17 AM EDT, 03/25/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with a statement from Google in the fourth paragraph.)
The European Commission said Monday it opened a sweeping investigation into Meta Platforms ( META ) , Apple ( AAPL ) , and Alphabet's Google for non-compliance under the bloc's Digital Markets Act.
The Commission said it is looking into "Alphabet's rules on steering in Google Play and self-preferencing on Google Search, Apple's ( AAPL ) rules on steering in the App Store and the choice screen for Safari and Meta's 'pay or consent model'."
According to the Commission, Meta, Apple ( AAPL ) and Google could face fines of up to 10% of their worldwide turnover.
Google told MT Newswires in a statement that it has engaged with the Commission as it implemented changes in its services in Europe to comply with the DMA. "We will continue to defend our approach in the coming months," said a spokesperson for the company.
Meta and Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
