09:23 AM EST, 01/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Google's ( GOOG ) response in the last paragraph.)
The European Commission said Tuesday that it has launched two separate lines of proceedings to assist Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) in complying with its obligations under the Digital Markets Act.
The regulator said the proceedings "formalize" the commission's dialogue with Google ( GOOG ), the regulator said.
The first set of proceedings concerns Google's ( GOOG ) obligation to provide third-party developers interoperability with hardware and software features in its Android operating system, with specific instructions to Google ( GOOG ) on how it should grant third-party AI service providers access to the same features, the regulator said.
The second proceedings regard Google's ( GOOG ) granting third-party providers of online search engines access to data held by Google Search on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory, or FRAND, terms.
The commission said it will end the proceedings within six months and will communicate preliminary findings to Google ( GOOG ) that set out proposed measures it intends to impose on Google ( GOOG ), which could include penalty payments, within three months.
Google's ( GOOG ) Senior Competition Counsel Clare Kelly told MT Newswires that Google ( GOOG ) is already licensing Search data to competitors under the DMA. "We are concerned that further rules which are often driven by competitor grievances, rather than the interest of consumers, will compromise user privacy, security, and innovation."
