A federal judge late Monday granted nine of 11 motions made by Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) unit to dismiss a class-action suit that accused the company of profiting from scams involving Google Play gift cards by refusing to refund money stolen from victims.
The suit was brought by plaintiffs, including Judy May, who fell victim in April 2021 to a gift card scam involving Google Play gift cards, a court filing showed Monday.
May lost money because scammers induced her to buy gift cards but failed to show that Google ( GOOG ) caused her losses or was aware it was receiving stolen funds, according to the court filing.
"May only realized she had been scammed after contacting her relative about the supposed government agent and learning that the person she had been communicating with on Facebook Messenger was not legitimate," according to the court filing. "The court finds that May has failed to sufficiently allege any viable cause of action."
Alphabet didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
