Ford Motor ( F ) said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that it will spend about $570 million to remedy a fuel leak issue in certain vehicles that are being recalled in the US.
A fuel injector may crack, resulting in fuel or vapor migrating to and accumulating near ignition sources, resulting in potential underhood fire, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday.
Ford will recall 694,271 certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, 2020-2022 Escape and other models. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 0.3% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
The NHTSA said a remedy is currently under development, and that dealers will update the engine control software, free of charge, as an interim repair.
Ford said the cost of $570 million will be reflected in its fiscal Q2 earnings as a special item and will not impact the adjusted EBIT, adjusted earnings per share, or adjusted free cash flow.
Shares of the company were down 2% in recent premarket activity Wednesday.
