04:19 AM EDT, 10/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Google's ( GOOG ) response in the last paragraph.)
Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) on Friday petitioned a federal court judge to temporarily halt his order to open up its Android operating system app store Play to greater competition.
Google ( GOOG ) claimed that Judge James Donato's Oct. 7 order, set to go into effect on Nov. 1, would bring "serious safety, security, and privacy risks into the Android ecosystem" and "irreparably" hurt the tech giant.
A federal jury verdict last year sided against Google ( GOOG ) in a lawsuit by Epic Games, whose lawyers successfully argued Play breached antitrust laws, Reuters reported.
Donato ordered Google ( GOOG ) to allow competing in-app payment methods and bars it from paying phone, tablet, and television makers from to preinstall Play.
Google ( GOOG ) said it needs more time to comply with the ruling. "Given the very short timeframe-just three weeks-to implement a number of technically and procedurally complex changes, there is a significant risk that they will not work properly or cannot be accomplished at scale when implemented on Nov. 1," the company said.
In an email, Google ( GOOG ) referred MT Newswires to an Oct. 7 statement in which it vowed to appeal the Epic Games verdict. "The initial decision and today's Epic-requested changes put that at risk and undercut Android's ability to compete with Apple's iOS," the statement said.
