Update: Google Granted Temporary Stay Pending Appeal in Judge's Order to Open Play to Rival In-App Payment Methods
Oct 22, 2024 12:52 PM

03:23 AM EDT, 10/22/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Google's ( GOOG ) response in the last paragraph.)

Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) on Friday was granted a stay of a court order demanding it open its Play store to other apps' payment methods pending consideration of its appeal.

But US District Court Judge James Donato rejected Google's ( GOOG ) request for a broader halt pending the appeal because the company has failed to show either the likelihood of success of the appeal or any public interest, a court ruling said.

The case stems from a lawsuit filed by Epic Games alleging Google ( GOOG ) maintains an illegal monopoly position over Android platform in-app payment methods.

A Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson said it was pleased with the decision, describing Epic's demands as "dangerous remedies" that "threaten Google Play's ability to provide a safe and secure experience."
