Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) will go back to the drawing board regarding plans to construct a data center in Chile's capital amid environmental concerns over the project, the company told MT Newswires Tuesday.
Google ( GOOG ) has informed Chile's environmental regulator that "at this time, [it] will not proceed with the previous permitting process for the data center project in the commune of Cerrillos as it was presented originally and approved in 2020," a Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson said.
Google ( GOOG ) will instead begin a new application process and will be "working with local partners to identify a plan for the future aligned with our 24/7 carbon-free energy ambition and commitment to climate-conscious data center cooling," the spokesperson added.
The project has reportedly sparked worries among residents and local officials over the possible impact on Santiago's aquifer, as the data servers will require huge volumes of water for cooling.
