11:11 AM EDT, 09/03/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to include comments from a Hyatt Hotels ( H ) official in the fourth paragraph.)
Thousands of workers from Hyatt Hotels ( H ) , Marriott International ( MAR ) , and Hilton Worldwide Holdings ( HLT ) in nine US cities went on strike on Labor Day, demanding "higher wages, fair staffing and workloads, and the reversal of Covid-era cuts," union Unite Here said Monday.
According to the union, over 10,000 of its members launched strikes at 25 hotels "after months of unresolved negotiations." Strikes have also been approved and "could begin at any time" in three more locations, the union added.
Unite Here said the labor action could last up to three days.
Michael D'Angelo, the head of labor relations for Hyatt in the Americas, told MT Newswires that the company has offered "competitive wages, health care and retirement benefits at the hotels that are on strike" and it remains open to continue bargaining with UNITE HERE. D'Angelo also said the affected Hyatt hotels have contingency plans to minimize the strikes' impact on operations.
Marriott International ( MAR ) and Hilton Worldwide Holdings ( HLT ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comments.
