Update: Irish Data Protection Regulator Fines Meta $102 Million for GDPR Violations
Oct 2, 2024 11:58 PM

09:13 AM EDT, 09/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Meta's response in the last paragraphs.)

Meta Platforms' ( META ) Irish unit was fined by the Irish Data Protection Commission 91 million euros ($101.6 million) for violations of the General Data Protection Regulation following the investigation of Meta Ireland's inadvertent storage of social media user passwords in plaintext on its internal systems, the Irish Data Protection Commission said on Friday.

The commission's decision also includes a reprimand.

In a statement to MT Newswires, Meta said it discovered and reported the breach itself and quickly sought to patch up its platform.

"We took immediate action to fix this error, and there is no evidence that these passwords were abused or accessed improperly," the company said. "We proactively flagged this issue to our lead regulator, the Irish Data Protection Commission, and have engaged constructively with them throughout this inquiry."
