11:51 AM EDT, 07/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to include additional details in the third to sixth paragraphs.)

Airlines resumed flights Friday morning after a major tech outage, but problems are expected to linger throughout the day, The New York Times reported Friday.

Over 1,400 flights in the US were canceled and at least 3,800 were delayed as of midmorning, according to the report, which cited data from FlightAware, a company that tracks flight information.

Globally, there were around 110,000 commercial flights scheduled on Friday, the report said, citing aviation data company Cirium. A quarter of these flights, carrying up to 3.7 million passengers, were set to depart airports in the US, according to the report.

"The FAA is closely monitoring a technical issue impacting IT systems at US airlines," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement posted on X. "Several airlines have requested FAA assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved."

American Airlines Group ( AAL ) said in a statement that it reestablished its operation as of 5 a.m. ET. "We expect there will be impact to our flight schedule today, including delays and cancellations."

Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) said it has resumed some flight departures, but additional delays and cancellations are expected Friday.
