Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) is using its extensive library of 20 billion YouTube ( GOOG ) videos to train its AI models, including its AI assistant Gemini and its Veo3 video generation model, CNBC reported Thursday.
Video creators and media organizations are largely unaware that their content could be used in training Google's ( GOOG ) AI models, the news outlet reported, citing interviews with experts.
Google ( GOOG ) confirmed that it utilizes YouTube ( GOOG ) videos to train its AI models, but that it only uses a subset of the videos and that it honors specific agreements with creators and media companies, according to the report.
"We're clear in our Terms of Service that we use YouTube ( GOOG ) data to make our products better, and this remains the case with AI," YouTube ( GOOG ) spokesperson Nicole Bell said in a statement to MT Newswires.
The company has also "invested in robust protections that allow creators to protect their image and likeness in the AI era," according to the statement.
