12:33 PM EDT, 06/12/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Amazon ( AMZN ) comment in the last two paragraphs.)
Amazon.com ( AMZN ) asked the Luxembourg-based General Court to scrap the European Commission's designation of the company as a "very large online platform" under the EU's Digital Services Act, Reuters reported Thursday, citing Robert Spano, an Amazon ( AMZN ) lawyer.
A company with a VLOP designation is required to do more to address illegal online content, among other things, the report said.
The VLOP rules "make no sense when applied to online marketplaces" such as the Amazon Store, which don't pose systemic risks, and VLOP rules "do not and cannot rationally assist in preventing the dissemination of illegal or counterfeit goods," Spano said, according to the report.
A court ruling is expected in the coming months, Reuters reported.
"The DSA was designed to address systemic risks posed by very large companies with advertising as their primary revenue and that distribute speech and information," an Amazon ( AMZN ) spokesperson said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires, confirming that the hearing was held Thursday in Luxembourg.
The Amazon Store "does not pose any such systemic risks," the spokesperson said. "It only sells goods, and it doesn't disseminate or amplify information, views or opinions."
