Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) data center footprint totals more than 900 facilities in more than 50 countries, Bloomberg News reported Monday, citing documents collected via the investigative website SourceMaterial.
In addition to dedicated data centers, Amazon's ( AMZN ) cloud unit uses server racks co-located with others in hundreds of facilities for about a fifth of its computing power, Bloomberg said.
Amazon's ( AMZN ) presence at colocation facilities ranges from a few server racks to most or all of the buildings in cities like Frankfurt and Tokyo, the report said.
"Our approach balances ownership with flexibility," an Amazon Web Services spokesperson said in an emailed response to MT Newswires' request for comment.
"While we own and operate the majority of our data centers, we strategically leverage third-party options when they provide additional capacity or geographic reach," the spokesperson said. "This long-term planning approach allows us to make precise decisions that align with our customers' evolving requirements."
