Update: Market Chatter: Amazon to Pay New York Times at Least $20 Million Yearly in AI Deal
Jul 30, 2025 8:30 AM

11:10 AM EDT, 07/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Amazon's ( AMZN ) response in the fourth paragraph.)

Amazon's ( AMZN ) deal with the New York Times ( NYT ) will likely fetch the news publisher about $20 million to $25 million a year, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.

The deal, which was announced earlier in May without the financial terms, gave Amazon ( AMZN ) access to a broad range of content from the Times, allowing Amazon ( AMZN ) to train its AI on Times' material and give summaries and short excerpts in its products and services like Alexa, according to the report.

Amazon's ( AMZN ) annual payment to the New York Times ( NYT ) is about 1% of the Times' 2024 total revenue, WSJ said, adding that the amount offers an insight into how publishers and AI companies are valuing news content amid changing habits of how consumers read information online.

Responding to a request for comment from MT Newswires, the New York Times ( NYT ) and Amazon ( AMZN ) said they did not want to comment beyond the May announcement.
