Update: Market Chatter: Amazon, Walmart's Flipkart Found Violating India's Product Quality Rules
Mar 21, 2025 6:14 AM

08:58 AM EDT, 03/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Flipkart's response in the fourth paragraph.)

Amazon.com ( AMZN ) and Walmart's ( WMT ) Flipkart were found to have violated product quality rules in India by storing, selling and exhibiting products without the required standards certificate, Reuters reported Thursday, citing an Indian government statement.

The Bureau of Indian Standards on Wednesday raided warehouses operated by the retail firms in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu state, and found products that didn't have the agency's standard mark, the report said, citing the statement.

An Amazon India spokesperson said the firm was engaged closely with regulators and other stakeholders, while a Flipkart spokesperson said the company worked with sellers for awareness and compliance with laws, according to the report.

"As a marketplace, we work with sellers to drive awareness and to comply with all applicable laws," Flipkart said in a statement emailed to MT Newswires. "The platform has several processes to review the listings sellers make on the marketplace, and also conducts regular audits to ensure compliance."

Amazon ( AMZN ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
