02:57 PM EST, 11/04/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with response from an Amazon.com ( AMZN ) spokesperson in the sixth paragraph.)
Amazon.com ( AMZN ) has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity AI, demanding it to stop allowing its Comet browser agent to make online purchases for users, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, citing unnamed people familiar with the letter.
The e-commerce giant claims that the tool violates its terms of service, and harms the shopping experience, the report said, adding that Perplexity called Amazon's ( AMZN ) actions "bullying" as both companies are developing AI shopping agents.
Last November, Amazon ( AMZN ) asked Perplexity to pause its purchasing bots until an agreement was reached, which Perplexity initially complied with, according to the report.
Amazon ( AMZN ) told Bloomberg that third-party apps that make purchases for users, like Perplexity's Comet, must operate openly and follow service rules. Perplexity Chief Executive said Comet does not scrape or train on Amazon ( AMZN ) data, only completes purchases for users.
Perplexity is an Amazon Web Services customer, and Amazon ( AMZN ) founder Jeff Bezos has invested in the startup, according to the report.
In a statement emailed to MT Newswires, Amazon.com ( AMZN ) said, "We think it's fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions whether or not to participate. This helps ensure a positive customer experience and it is how others operate, including food delivery apps and the restaurants they take orders for, delivery service apps and the stores they shop from, and online travel agencies and the airlines they book tickets with for customers. Agentic third-party applications such as Perplexity's Comet have the same obligations, and we've repeatedly requested that Perplexity remove Amazon ( AMZN ) from the Comet experience, particularly in light of the significantly degraded shopping and customer service experience it provides."
Perplexity AI didn't immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comments.
