Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) European unit and four of its managers could face trial over alleged tax evasion worth about 1.2 billion euros ($1.38 billion), Reuters reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.
In December, the e-commerce giant agreed to pay 527 million euros to Italy's Revenue Agency to settle the tax dispute, but prosecutors in Milan have decided to proceed with their investigation and request for trial, the report said.
A judge will set the date for a preliminary hearing, according to the report.
"We will forcefully defend our position on the ungrounded criminal case," Amazon ( AMZN ) said in a statement e-mailed to MT Newswires. "Unpredictable regulatory environments, disproportionate penalties, and protracted legal proceedings are increasingly affecting Italy's attractiveness as an investment destination."
