10:47 AM EDT, 09/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with American Airlines' ( AAL ) and Barclays' responses to requests for comment in the fourth and fifth paragraphs.)
American Airlines Group ( AAL ) is in talks with Citigroup ( C ) to make the bank its exclusive credit card partner, a move that would see the airline drop Barclays (BCS) from a partnership that goes back to 2013, CNBC report, citing people with knowledge of the negotiations.
American has been working with card networks and banks for months on a new long-term deal, as it seeks to consolidate its business with a single issuer, the people reportedly told CNBC.
The talks are ongoing, and the timing of an agreement, which would require regulatory approval, is not known, CNBC reported, citing the people.
"We continue to work with all of our partners, including our co-branded credit card partners, to explore opportunities to improve the products and services we provide our mutual customers and bring even more value to the AAdvantage program," American Airlines ( AAL ) said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.
Barclays declined to comment to MT Newswires, and Citigroup ( C ) did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
