10:50 AM EST, 03/05/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to include the EC's response in the fifth paragraph.)
Apple ( AAPL ) is changing its decision about blocking apps that don't go through its app store, The Financial Times reported Friday, citing the company.
The European Commission had been preparing a formal investigation into Apple's ( AAPL ) move to disable so-called "progressive web apps" in the bloc, the report said.
"We have received requests to continue to offer support for home screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing home screen web apps capability in the EU," the company was quoted as saying. "The EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for home screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March."
Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
"We welcome Apple's ( AAPL ) announcement to revert its decision to remove support for Home Screen Web Apps for users of iPhones in the EU," the European Commission told MT Newswires. "Contrary to Apple's ( AAPL ) public representation, the removal of Home Screen Web Apps on iOS in the EU was neither required, nor justified, under the Digital Markets Act."
