High-end Nvidia ( NVDA ) computer chips may have been sold to Chinese academic customers by resellers in violation of new US rules intended to bar the export of such chips to China, Reuters reported Tuesday after reviewing of tender documents.
The US expanded its export controls on high-performance semiconductors to China on Nov. 17 in a bid to prevent their use in artificial intelligence and other advanced applications by the Chinese military or any other national security uses.
Select Nvidia ( NVDA ) products were included in the ban, but Reuters found they still made their way to Chinese universities and research facilities through servers containing embedded Nvidia ( NVDA ) chips.
The servers were made by Dell Technologies ( DELL ) and Super Micro Computer ( SMCI ) , and Gigabyte Technology in Taiwan, according to Reuters, citing unreported tenders fulfilled between Nov. 20 and Feb. 28. The companies separately told the news service they were examining their recent sales, but believe they complied with all US restrictions.
The companies did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comments.
Nvidia ( NVDA ) shares were 3.6% higher, Super Micro shares were up nearly 7% and Dell was rising past 3%.
