Dec 12, 2024 12:54 PM

03:35 PM EST, 12/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with statement from ExxonMobil ( XOM ) in the third paragraph.)

ExxonMobil ( XOM ) and one of its longtime lobbyists are facing calls for scrutiny and accountability following a scandal in which the email accounts of US critics of the energy giant were hacked, Reuters reported Thursday.

US Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden, and a number of environmental groups are calling for scrutiny of the company and Washington lobbyist, DCI Group, which has been linked to a hacking and leaking operation targeting more than 500 environmentalists' email accounts between 2015 and 2018, the report said.

"ExxonMobil ( XOM ) has not been involved in, nor are we aware of, any hacking activities. If there was any hacking involved, we condemn it in the strongest possible terms," the company's spokesperson told MT Newswires in an email.
